This behavior mimics hunting and is important in helping kittens learn to stalk, capture, and kill prey. Cats will also engage in play fighting, with each other and with humans. This behavior may be a way for cats to practice the skills needed for real combat, and might also reduce any fear they associate with launching attacks on other animals. Due to the close similarity between play and hunting, cats prefer to play with objects that resemble prey, such as small furry toys that move rapidly, but rapidly lose interest (they become habituated) in a toy they have played with before. Cats also tend to play with toys more when they are hungry. String is often used as a toy, but if it is eaten it can become caught at the base of the cat’s tongue and then move into the intestines, a medical emergency which can cause serious illness and death. Due to the risks posed by cats eating string, it is sometimes replaced with a laser pointer's dot, which cats may chase. While concerns have been raised about the safety of these lasers, Professor John Marshall, an ophthalmologist at St Thomas' Hospital, has stated that it would be "virtually impossible" to blind a cat with a laser pointer.

Cats attacks reporter on Live News Bulletin

That cat gave her LOTS of WARNINGS, First she was handling it totally wrong, MOST cats do NoT like being handled on their rear sections,She was also grasping it another NO NO, a Cat growling is serious!,THey mean Buisness when they growl!.
Cats are very Loving animals I used to hate them until I had a stray come to my house,It was very loving, but you have to know how to treat them!!. What seems an unlikely combination, given the predator-prey context that first comes to mind, is in fact a common and often rewarding match. The key is to remove that stereotype from your mind and, more importantly, from the environment. In an earlier issue we described some of the friendships that have developed between these two. Now we offer ideas on introducing cats and rabbits in ways that minimize stress for all concerned.

Cat tries to revive his dead friend (Video)

No other being can fully understand what another has lived through. The discovery is helping to decode how these rarely seen—and barely seeing, though not completely blind—snakes came to colonize much of the planet.

Growing to about a foot (30 centimeters) long, blind snakes act a lot like worms, burrowing under the surface of every continent except Antarctica. Unlike worms, though, blind snakes have backbones and tiny scales. "Continental drift had a huge impact on blind snake evolution by separating populations from each other as continents moved apart," said study co-leader Nicolas Vidal, of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Now considered part of Africa, Madagascar split from what's now India about 94 million years ago. Since then, the blind snakes on Madagascar have changed enough to give rise to a whole new family, added Penn State biologist Blair Hedges, the study's other co-leader.

Blind Snakes Break Free of "Indigascar"

Blind snake fossils are nearly nonexistent, so their evolutionary history has been a mystery. But by comparing five genes from 96 far-flung blind snake species, the researchers were able to create a map of the snakes' evolutionary family tree. Using estimated time frames for genetic mutation, the team was able to estimate when the different species had arisen. The wormlike snakes first appeared on the southern supercontinent Gondwana, the team says.

As Gondwana split apart, the blind snakes were isolated to what the researchers call Indigascar—a landmass including what are now India and Madagascar. Relatively soon after the split, the newly recognized family arose, genetic data suggest.

Mystery of Blind Snakes' Spread

After the "Indigascar" split, blind snakes somehow migrated far beyond India and Madagascar. The snakes mysteriously appeared in Australia some 28 million years ago, for example—a period during which no land connections existed to that continent. And African and South American blind snake lineages apparently separated only 63 million years ago. That's some 40 million years after Africa and South America split up, so moving landmasses can't have caused the later evolutionary divide.

Giant Panda Mating (rare video)

Initially the primary method of breeding Giant Pandas in captivity was by artificial insemination, as they seemed to lose their interest in mating once they were captured. This led some scientists to try extreme methods such as showing them videos of giant Pandas mating and giving the males Viagra. Only recently have researchers started having success with captive breeding programs, and they have now determined that Giant Pandas have comparable breeding to some populations of the American Black Bear, a thriving bear family. The current reproductive rate is considered one young every two years. Giant Pandas reach sexual maturity between the ages of four and eight, and may be reproductive until age 20. The mating season is between March and May, when a female goes into her estrous cycle which lasts for two or three days and only occurs once a year. When mating, the female is in a crouching, head-down position as the male mounts her from behind. Copulation time is short, ranging from thirty seconds to five minutes, but the male may mount her repeatedly to ensure successful fertilization. The gestation period ranges from 95 to 160 days. Cubs weigh only 90 to 130 grams (3.2 to 4.6 ounces), which is about 1/900 of the mother's weight. Usually, the female gives birth to one or two cubs. Since cubs are born very small and helpless, they need the mother's undivided attention, so she is able to care for only one of her cubs. She usually abandons one of her cubs, and it dies soon after birth. At this time, scientists do not know how the female chooses which cub to raise, and this is a topic of ongoing research. The father has no part in helping raise the cub.

Giant Pandas Mating - For more amazing video clips, click here

When Elephants Get Out Of Control

Elephants are the largest land animals now living. At birth it is common for an elephant calf to weigh 120 kg. They tipically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kilograms. The elephant has appeared in cultures across the world. They are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence, where they are thought to be on par with cetaceans and hominids. Aristotle once said the elephant was "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind". The word "elephant" has its origins in the Greek ἐλέφας, meaning "ivory" or "elephant". Because of their large size, they cannot be kept as pets like dogs, cats, rabbits or other mammals. This is the reason that although they are living in different zoo of the world for the last 100 years, yet their wild instincts are still with them. Watch the video and see what happens when an elephant get angry.

Best Ever Talking Parrot (Einstein, the superstar)

Is it not the dream of a parrot owner to each one of his or her peers that they have a talking parrot? I know that was my goal. I always wanted to have a parrot that would greet every new guest that entered my house. It took a lot of training but in the end I finally achieved this goal and was able to tell everyone about it. What are some of the best things about having a talking parrot?

The great thing about having a talking parrot is that you can teach them to answer every question you ask them with either a yes or no. How many other types of pets are there that can actually tell you if they have done something bad? After a great deal of practice a parrot can have the ability to understand every question it has been taught. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

Save Hundreds Of Lives This Year

H.S. Dhiman

Every year a large number of birds and stray animals die due to the ill effects of dehydration. It is mainly the result of the so called development and beautification drives, which are drying up the natural sources of water.

It is not only during hot summer days that animals need drinking water. Like humans, they need it everyday, throughout the year. But it is nowhere there. If you have seen the stray cows and dogs desperately licking the foul-smelling water seeping out of a gutter, you can well imagine their plight.

Everyone of us can make a dramatic change in this sad situation by a simple act of kindness - put up water bowls.

Put up water bowls on your roof, in a window, in the balcony, on the road, in a park – anywhere. It will be preferable to use earthen pots for the purpose. They don't tilt and are less likely to be stolen.

Soon your water bowls will attract many thirsty cows, dogs and cats, birds of different species, squirrels, chameleons, honey bees, wasps and grasshoppers.

You will then realize that a small effort on your part is saving hundreds of innocent lives.

It is so simple. The gestation period is 30–32 days.

Pirates of the Sky

These lovely seabirds are known as "avian pirates" or "Pirates of Sky" because they steal much of their food from other birds that are carrying their prey back to their nest. The study set out to prove that the bird is using its wing feathers to create its violin like sound. The study shows that Manakins vibrates its wings at more than 100 cycles per seconds twice the speed of hummingbirds. Using laysers to monitor feather vibrations, it was observed that the manakins clubed shaped feathers vibrate at 1500 hertz. This is the same frequency of the sound made by the manakins. There are also other birds that use their wings in this manner. This new evidence places this bird with arthropods which also uses their wings to produce singing sound such as crickets

The Birth of Anaconda (Video)

Anacondas are large, nonvenomous snakes found in tropical South America. Upon returning to his office, Carter found his staff disbelieving of his story, insisting that rabbits couldn't swim, or that they would never approach a person threateningly. The incident was captured on footage taken by a White House photographer.

Media accounts and public perception

Press Secretary Jody Powell mentioned the event to Associated Press correspondent Brooks Jackson on August 28, 1979, who filed the story with the wire service the following day. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat.”

The incident with the rabbit became fodder for those illustrating Carter's presidency as hapless and enfeebled. It was even mocked by the Republicans during the United States presidential election, 1980.

"Sparkie", National Celebrity of its time

Sparkie Williams (1954–1962) was a talking budgie who has provided the inspiration for a new opera by Michael Nyman and Carsten Nicolai. The opera was performed in Berlin in March 2009. Sparkie had a repertoire of more than 500 words and eight nursery rhymes, becoming a national celebrity after fronting an advertising campaign for Capern’s bird seed, and making a record which sold 20,000 copies. After he died, he was put on show at Newcastle’s Hancock Museum.

History

Born and bred in North East England, Sparkie was owned by Mrs Mattie Williams, who lived in Forest Hall, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He earned his name after Mrs Williams called him ‘A bright little spark,' and she taught him to speak, recite songs and sing nursery rhymes. Sparkie had a huge repertoire of words and sayings. By the time he was three-and-a-half, he had won the BBC International Cage Word Contest in July 1958. He was so good, in fact, that he was disqualified from taking part again.

Sparkie was courted by bird seed sellers and fronted the advertisement campaign for Capern’s bird seed for two years. He was recorded talking with budgie expert Philip Marsden on BBC radio, and appeared on the BBC Tonight programme with Cliff Michelmore. When Sparkie died, he was stuffed by the best taxidermist in London and taken on a tour of Britain in an exhibition of his life and work, before coming back to the Hancock Museum in 1996. Sparkie Williams is acclaimed as the world’s most outstanding talking bird in the Guinness Book of Records.

He is now part of the collections owned by the Natural History Society of Northumbria.

Opera

The new opera inspired by Sparkie is based on Michael Nyman’s 1977 piece Pretty Talk. The original piece used material from a record made by Capern’s bird-food company to help customers teach their pet birds to talk. The 7-inch flexi disc played short sentences spoken by Sparkie’s owner, Mrs Williams, to encourage her pet to speak - followed by replies from Sparkie himself. The new opera, Sparkie: Cage and Beyond, features further recordings from the ‘Sparkie’ archives of the Natural History Society of Northumbria. A CD of Sparkie talking has already been released.

On display

Work on a £26 million extension and refurbishing of the Hancock Museum in Newcastle will see it re-open in May 2009 as part of the Great North Museum.
